Built for easy installation in 9 to 20 meter (29’ to 65’) hulls, the SeaProp60 Flash™ is directly fitted to the combustion engine. ![]() The system, based on the standard Seaprop60 saildrive, consists of patent pending 5kW electric generator/motor system (directly fitted on top of the saildrive) which turns to charge a bank of batteries while the boat is under diesel power. No additional clutch or engaging devices are used, thus avoiding typical failures or malfunctions of similar systems. When quiet, more fuel-efficient operating conditions such as controlled noise and speed areas are desired, the diesel drive is shut down while the batteries power the electric motor, which offers precise and instantaneous speed control. Operating endurance under battery power is estimated to be from 1.5 to 4 hours, depending on vessel weight and speed and battery capacities. The SeaProp60 Flash can be used as a stand-alone 5kW diesel generator when at anchor or when shore power is unavailable. This should supply ample power for air conditioning. Because the SeaProp60 Flash can convert to electric power propulsion at inefficient points on the diesel engine’s power curve (idling, maneuvering, docking), the system can result in significantly improved fuel consumption and extended cruising range. It also provides built-in propulsion redundancy. If the diesel engine fails, the electric drive can be deployed, and vice versa. The SeaProp60 Flash hybrid propulsion system offers versatile, economical, dual mode propulsion that can be combined with other vessel renewable energy sources. It will be sold through sail boat builders and dealers, marine engine packagers and marine service dealers. For more information, please contact Claudio Bassi at Twin Disc S.r.l. (Decima) Italy.
