Integrated L-Drive

The thruster unit is an L-Drive rudder propeller, with an integrated electric motor as primary drive. This results in a very compact thruster design, which reduces the installation and maintenance requirements considerably. As with all Veth rudder propellers, it produces a thrust which can be directed over 360°

Compact thruster

The PM motor was designed in collaboration with Visedo and allows for a much lower mounting height. On average, a PM motor is 40% to 60% more compact than an asynchronous motor. The permanent magnet (PM) motor is seamlessly integrated into the thruster, resulting in a highly compact design. When combined with the special mounting method, precise headset alignment, and adjustments to the control box, it ensures optimal performance. The design makes use of every millimeter, without compromising quality.

Noise reduction

The Veth Integrated L-drive provides for quiet operation while maintaining efficiency and reliability.

  1. Gear Transmission Elimination:
    • Unlike some other propulsion systems, the Veth Integrated L-drive does not have a gear transmission within the ship.
    • This absence of gears significantly reduces noise production.
  2. Water-Cooled Permanent Magnet (PM) Motor:
    • The L-drive incorporates a water-cooled PM motor instead of the traditional air-cooled asynchronous motor.
    • Water cooling is more efficient and quieter, contributing to noise reduction.
  3. Electrical Steering:
    • The L-drive system utilizes electrical steering rather than hydraulic steering.
    • Electrical systems tend to be quieter, further enhancing noise reduction.
High efficiency and minimal resistance

L-Drive Efficiency:
An L-drive, having only one gear transmission, inherently achieves higher efficiency. Specifically, the permanent magnet (PM) motor used in the L-drive is more efficient, especially during part-load conditions, compared to an asynchronous motor. At e.g. 25% load, there is an improvement in efficiency of 5.2%.

Operation compared to electric driven z-drive

For electric propulsion, there is a choice between a Veth Z-drive and a Veth L-drive. Comparted to the L-Drtive, the Z-drive has one more gear in the transmission resulting in a 1% efficiency loss. In addition to higher efficiency, an integrated L-drive is also less expensive to install.
