Know your options
Here’s a quick overview of your options for going beyond traditional diesel to electric and hybrid propulsion systems. Note that marine and land-based applications require different systems and configurations; talk with Twin Disc about your specific needs.
Full electric propulsion cuts fuel use and emissions, and also eliminates diesel engine maintenance costs. Configurable power-dense energy storage systems efficiently provide the energy needed to power the application.
Serial hybrid propulsion uses an electric motor to replace a traditional main diesel engine, drawing electric power from onboard gensets or a combination of onboard gensets and an energy storage system. Auxiliaries are powered by diesel.
Parallel hybrid propulsion pairs the diesel engine with an electric motor, requiring a transmission or azimuth thruster with dual power inputs as well as a controller. The system can be driven by the diesel engine, the electric motor, or both, offering the advantages of peak shaving and power boost, as well as fuel savings with a downsized engine. Power for the electric motor can come from an onboard energy storage system, onboard gensets, or both.
